22/04/00 - Hartlepool United 1 Mansfield Town 0
Chris Turner replaced the suspended Gary Strodder with on loan
Oldham striker Paul Beavers, in the only change to the Pool team
who beat Lincoln 2-0 at the Vic seven days earlier. Graeme Lee
moved back into defence, and Beavers took his place in the frontline.
Heavy rain during the night and in the early morning in Hartlepool
saw an 11:30am pitch inspection at Victoria Park. The rain stopped
and the surface was deemed playable. Pool nearly took the lead in
the first minute, an Ian Clark corner was headed into the side
netting by Kevin Henderson. Minutes later Henderson showed
Andrews a clean pair of heels and crossed for Beavers who could
only direct his header straight at Bobby Mimms. Mansfield looked
happy to sit back and attempt to hit Pool on the break. Martin
Hollund did well to block a powerful shot from Chris Greenacre
which nearly knocked the keeper off his feat. On 39 minutes
Clark worked the ball to Miller in the Stags box. Millers shot was
blocked by Mimms and hit Beavers, only to fly over the bar from
two yards out. Just before half time Beavers did well to met
a Pool free kick and direct his header goalwards, Mimms had it
covered though. HT: 0-0.
The second half saw Pool continue to press and look for the
vital first goal of the game. Tommy Miller seemed to be at the
centre of a lot of Pools attacking play, but it was Henderson
who broke the deadlock. Excellent work from Ian Clark on the left
resulted in a threaded ball to Kevin Henderson just inside
the Stags box. Hendo stepped around a defended and sent his shot into
the far corner of the net, giving Mimms little chance. In the 65th
minute Chris Turner replaced the hard working Paul Beavers with
James Coppinger. Coppingers first touch of the game nearly
resulted in Pools second goal, as he ran at the heart of the Stags
defence, only to see his shot charged down by Mimms. In the 77th
minute Craig Midgley replaced Kevin Henderson. Tommy Miller
looked to be ready to add to his 15 goal haul this season when
Paul Arnison set him free for a run at goal, however from a tight
angle hit shot across goal was turned away by Mimms. In the closing
stages Midgley took a knock and was replaced by Lee Fitzpatrick.
Pool comfortably saw out the remaining time to collect three
valuable points. FT: 1-0.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Lee, Barron, Westwood,
Clark, Stephenson, Miller, Arnison, Beavers (Coppinger),
Henderson (Midgley (Fitzpatrick)). Subs not used: Dibble, Tennebo.
Bookings: Henderson. Attendance: 3473.
The three points from yet another home win (16th this season)
sees Pool move up into 7th position and back amongst the play off
places. Mansfield looked like a side with little to play for.
They failed to end their goal drought and tested Martin Hollund
on only three occassions, all from long range. Pool now move
onto the little matter of a derby game with Darlington at Feethams
on Bank Holiday Monday. A sellout is expected and the game is
being billed as the biggest derby match for 10 years. There is
certainly a lot at stake. Can Pool do the double over Darlo?
Will Darlo gain revenge for their humbling defeat at the Vic?
Time will tell.
21/04/00 - Mansfield Preview
It's make or break weekend for Pool. With two games over the Easter Bank Holiday
weekend, by Monday night the fate of this rollercoaster of a season will be much clearer.
First on the agenda is the visited of Mansfield Town to the Vic. Pool will be hoping for a big
crowd and a comfortable win to set them up nicely for the derby game on Easter Monday.
Pool go into the game in confident mood, last weeks 2-0 home win over Lincoln City
went some way towards making up for the poor display at Rochdale a week earlier. Pool
now have the best home record in the third division having won more home games than any
other team. Another home win will hopefully see Pool back in the play off positions. Chris
Turner will be without Gary Strodder who is suspended for the game. Graeme Lee is expected
to move back into defence with either Paul Beavers or James Coppinger replacing him upfront.
Mansfield arrive at the Vic in very poor form.
The Stags have failed to score or win in their last five games and after threatening to burst
into the play off scene, they have dropped away and currently sit in 16th position in division 3.
With injuries throughout the team, boss Billy Dearden will leave his team selection as late as
possible to see who he can include in his team. Definitely missing is Pool old boy David Linighan
who is suffering from a hamstring problem.
Pool have struggled against Mansfield at the Vic in recent
years. 1998/99 saw a Stags win with Denny Ingram netting from the spot for Pool as they went down 2-1.
1997/98 ended as a 2-2 draw with Stevie Howard and Buddy Halliday netting and 1996/97 also ended 2-2
with Joe Joe Joe Allon and Mark Cooper notching for Pool. This season Pool won a thrilling game at Field
Mill 3-2 with Sam Shilton, Paul Stephenson and Tommy Miller scoring the Pool goals.
Most people seem to be dismissing this game as an easy win for Pool. Mansfield on their day can be
very dangerous, just asked Rotherham who were embarrassed by the Stags in front of the Sky cameras a month
ago. Pool though should have the desire and fight to see of Bill Dearden's team and set themselves up nicely for
this little game in Monday. ITN predict another 2-0 home win for Pool, Tommy 'haircut' Miller and James Coppinger
to net.
15/04/00 - Hartlepool United 2 Lincoln City 0
Well what can I tell you? not a lot really. I'm in a quick break between
weddings reception and night party. An afternoon of trips to reception
in order to use the mobile phone, was reward with Pool winning
2-0. Boss Chris Turner sprung a surprise on the Pools fans by naming
Graeme Lee upfront alongside Kevin Henderson. Lee wasn't expected
to return from injury until next week. It was Henderson
who gave Pool a flying start. 6 minutes in Paul Arnison crossed
from the right, Hendo pulled away from his marker and planted
the ball firmly in the net with a superb header (apparently!).
Pools second game on 39 minutes. Kevin Henderson won a free kick
and received four stitches in the back of his head into the bargain.
From the resulting free kick Tommy Miller collected the
ball. After beating a couple of men he cooly finished to give
Pool a comfortable cushion. Pool could have extended their lead
in the second half, but didn't! That's all then, an excellent
win by all accounts. Pool don't move up the table, but are putting
pressure on the teams ahead of them. Next up is Mansfield
at the Vic next Saturday. I'm off out to celebrate!
14/04/00 - Lincoln Preview
No need for that ark Noah, the rain has stopped son. Just, a early morning
pitch inspection at the Vic will determine in the weeks rain has made the
surface unplayable. If there is no more rain during the night the game should
be on, but that pitch is going to be very heavy.
Last weekends game
at Rochdale turned out to be a bit of a nightmare, a 2-0 defeated, Gary
Strodder sent off and a stinker of a performance. Chris Turner has made
sure his players understood that they let him down, themselves down and
more importantly they let the fans. So an improvement is most definitely
expected for this game with Lincoln City. Going into the game Lincoln's
season looks all but over, sitting in 14th position the play off's now
looked out of reach, especially after last weeks defeat at the hands of
Cheltenham Town. The third divisions surprise form team of the moment.
This week Lincoln have announced they are releasing six players as they
plan for next season.
Pool though are still
in the thick of the play off race. Just two points behind Barnet in 7th
and with back to back home games coming up Pool can push themselves back
into one of the play off berths if they can pick up six points. Chris
Turner is expected to name an unchanged team, although Sam Shilton has
been knocking on the managers door this week, after a brace against Hull
during Pools reserve team 3-1 win at Hull in midweek. Gary Strodder play
his last game before sitting out the Mansfield match and said "Lincoln
are a tough team to beat as they are a bit of a long ball side who play
for corners, long throw-ins and free kicks. Most of their goals have come
from set-pieces so us lads at the back will have to be on our guard. Me
even more so as I don't want to make any mistakes before I have to sit
out the game next week."
This season Pool
put on one of their best showings with a 2-1 win at Lincoln with the goals
coming from Ian Clark and Tommy Miller. Pool dominated the first half
and should have gone into the break with more than the one goal advantage
they held. Season 1998/99 saw Pool lose 3-0 at home in the AWS as Lincoln
pranced about in the second division for a while. 1997/98 a last minute
Jon Cullen goal gave Pool a point away from home and back at the Vic the
second last home game of the season resulted in another 1-1 draw with
Chris B**ch grabbing Pools goal.
There
are no if's nor but's about it. POOL MUST WIN. If they don't then the play
off's are surely gone. If they do, we'll take one game at a time! ITN
match prediction 3-1 to Pool.
08/04/00 - Rochdale 2 Hartlepool United 0
Chris Turner give duo Paul Beavers and Paul Arnison starting places
for the first time since the pair joined the club on transfer
deadline day. Beavers replaced Chris Freestone while Arnison
replaced Lee Fitzpatrick in central midfield. The rest of the
Pool team lined up as they did against Exeter a week previous.
On the subs bench two welcome returns, left wingback Sam
Shilton and Striker Craig Midgley both took their places after
lengthy layoff's with injuries. Three points would have been
excellent, one point vital, no points depending on results around
Pool, disasterous. Pool were looking to start the game in the
sort of fashion they have been ending them recently, but it
wasn't to be as Dale took an early lead. In the 13th minute
Gary Strodder was caught out of defence and Tony Ford's cross
took a slight deflection leaving Jason Peake the
simple task of heading past Martin Hollund from six yards out.
Soon after Ian Clark got himself into a good position but his
shot went over the bar. Clive Platt could have made it 2-0 but
managed to put his header off target, when a second goal looked
likely. As the half worn on Flicroft saw his shot rebound off
the Pool bar as Rochdale continued to stay on top of Pool.
Gary Strodder entered the refs notebook for a handball. Strodder
had been lucky to stay out of the notebook for so long after two
late challenges from behind. The half came to a close with
Rochdale the better of the two sides putting Pool under pressure
and generally going about their business in a more physical way,
winning the majority of 50/50 balls and not giving Pool space.
HT: 1-0.
Pool started the second half brightly and won three corners
in quick succession. But it was something of a false dawn. By
the 55th minute Pool were down to 10 men and 2-0 down. Gary
Strodder received his second booking of the game and played
no further part for Pool. Tony Ford's cross from a free kick
was met cleanly by Clive Platt who planted his header
past Hollund in the Pool goal. Chris Turner quickly tried to
change things around by introducing Kevin Henderson for Paul
Beavers in the 62nd minute and then Sam Shilton for Ian Clark.
In the 72nd minute Craig Midgley replaced James Coppinger as
Pool failed to get back into the game. In the 75th minute Dave
Bayliss put a header wide and soon after Craig Midgley worked
himself into space and got a shot on target. In the 78th minute
Dale had a chance to make it 3-0 as a quick free kick saw a
cross come over for Bayliss again who put his effort over the
bar when he should have scored. Pool struggled. FT: 2-0.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Strodder, Barron, Westwood,
Clark (Shilton), Stephenson, Miller, Arnison, Beavers (Henderson),
Coppinger (Midgley). Subs not used: Dibble, Freestone.
Bookings: Strodder (2=Red Card). Attendance: 2332 (509 Pool fans).
A very poor result for Pool. At a vital time of the season
Pool are beginning to struggle and the desperate search for
a goalscorer is now taking its toll. Still Chris Turner has
not found a settled partnership upfront and Pool struggle for
goals. Take a look at the fixture list
and see how many games Pool have won by more
than one goal. A play off place is still possible, but getting
more and more unlikely by the week. Pool have difficult games
coming up and must find some form if they are to end the season
on a high. Next up, Lincoln City at the Vic.
06/04/00 - Rochdale Preview
Rochdale
it is then, it's getting a bit repetitive writing this, but Pool need a
positive result from this match. Games are running out and if there's to
be some footie in the sun and a trip to Wemberleeee then three points has
got to be Chrissy Turners' target.
Pool are currently
playing 45 minute football, not showing up in the first half, then putting
a bit of effort in during the second. It seems to be working at home,
but it's not bearing fruit on the road. It's Pool poor away form that
has stopped them from climbing the table anymore this season. A couple
of wins from the last three away games should see holidays being booked
and train fares being paid for a trip to you know where. Of the remaining
away games (Dale, Darlo, Hull) this one looks the 'easiest' for Pool.
The trip to Darlo is bound to be difficult, especially after the 2-0 result
at the Vic earlier in the season. And a final day trip to Hull will be
difficult if points are needed. Dale were themselves in the hunt for a
play off place just a few weeks ago. But a severe drop in form has seen
them fall away from the chasing pack. Just 1500 people watched the midweek
1-1 draw with Torquay and if Pool can collect points, then Dale are out
of the race.
Pool new boys Paul
Arnison and Paul Beavers both completed another 90 minutes for Pool on
Monday when Pool drew 1-1 with the Boro in a prearrange behind closed
doors friendly type affair at the Boro training ground. Chris Turner is
likely to stick with the same squad who beat Exeter a week ago, but it
would come as no surprise if Beavers started in place of the still misfiring
Chris Freestone.
A large away support
is expected for Pool as the season reaches its climax and the chance to
avoid going shopping begins to dwindle. 1500 travelled the short distance
to York, 800 made the journey to the Shay to see Pool draw with Halifax,
so expect a figure somewhere between those two.
This season saw
a stormer of a match at the Vic,with Pool eventually running out 3-2 winners.
It was end to end stuff and one of the best games the Vic has seen for
many years. A repeat would do nicely. Last season Ian Clark scored the
only goal of the game as Pool sitting in 22nd position picked up three
much needed points. At the Vic the scored line was reversed with Dale
winning 1-0 in front of 2218 fans. Season 1997/98 witnessed a 2-0 Pool
win at the Vic with goals from B**ch and Halliday, away at Spotland the
game ended 2-1 to Dale with Ian Clark again scoring the Pool goal. Amazingly
only 1395 fans turned out for the game.
Pool
have got to come good away from home soon. The only doubt remains that Chris
Turner himself admits to not knowing why Pool are starting games so slowly.
If Pool are forced to chase the game again, a point maybe the best they
can hope for. If Pool can take the game to Dale and dictate, then a win
is possible. But ITN's going for a draw, 2-2 Clark and Beavers.
28/03/00 - Hartlepool United 2 Exeter City 1
Pool boss Chris Turner stuck with the team which took the
field at York City last Saturday, as Pool looked to get themselves
back amongst the playoff positions. Sam Shilton was added to the
full squad, in place of Thomas Tennebo. Exeter arrived at the Vic
with nothing much to play for and a long injury list. Exeter's third
division future looks to be perhaps just another three points away
from secure for another season. Pool just like previous two
games started slowly and it was Exeter who settled into their
stride first. Seemingly happy to let Alexander and Flack battle
against Pool central defenders of Barron, Strodder and Westwood
in an attempt to win numerous high balls into the Pool box.
Rowbotham tested Martin Hollund with a 30 yard drive in only
the second minute and Chris Curran's long throw saw Hollund
under pressure from the visiting forwards soon after. The long
throw is coming back into fashion, but Pools defence coped
with it well. In an rare Pool early attack Paul Stephenson tried
to set James Coppinger free, but the ball bobbled away from
the youngster and was quickly cleared by the City defence.
Steve Flack then received the ball from Rowbotham and poked
a shot past Gary Strodder which Martin Hollund did well to
push around the post. Excellent work done the left wing saw
Ian Clark put a deep cross in towards the back post which Chris
Freestone could only direct well over the City bar. Lee Fitzpatrick
tried his luck from distance, put his shot was saved. HT: 0-0.
After receiving a mixed reception after leaving the field,
Pool returned with the words of boss Chris Turner ringing in
their ears. And as with the games at Chester and York, Pool looked
more organised straight from the restart. Freestone and Miller
linked well on Pool's right, Miller finding Coppinger on the
edge of the Exeter penalty area. Coppinger's backheel fell
neatly for Freestone to get in a shot which was well held by
Matthews in the City goal. But Exeter took the lead against
the run of play in the 51st minute. Pool failed to clear a
corner and Exeter's player manager Noel Blake drilled the
ball in low and hard from 12 yards. Chris Turner changed his
midfield by replacing Lee Fitzpatrick with Paul Arnison. The
substitution was greeted with a mixed reaction as Fitzpatrick
was having a reasonable game in the middle of the park. Pool
fans were looking for a change up front. And they got it a couple
of minutes later. Paul Beavers replaced Chris Freestone who is
failing to reproduce the form he showed at Cheltenham with Pool.
The two subs made an instant impact on the game as Pool took
control. A control build up from Pool finally saw the ball
arrive at the feet of Paul Arnison who had a yard of space and smashed
a 25 yard shot into the top left hand corner of the net. The
Hartlepool born ex-Magpie showed his delight at the goal with a
70 yard celebration run. From the kick off Pool came again and
it was Ian Clark who skipped past three challenges and
finished off his impression of Ryan Giggs with a shot which gave
the City keeper no chance. The Vic roared and the players celebrated
with a Clarkie 'pile on', which he eventually crawled out of
to share his joy with the Town End. Pools quick one two gave
them control of the game. Although City tried to get back into
it Pool looked comfortable for most of the remaining time and
came close to extending their lead. Martin Hollund had to finger
tip a header over the bar, but Pool were not going to be denied
a vital three points. FT: 2-1.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Strodder, Barron, Westwood,
Clark, Miller, Stephenson, Fitzpatrick (Arnison), Coppinger (Henderson),
Freestone (Beavers). Unused Subs: Dibble, Shilton.
Exeter: Matthews, Gittens, Jarman, Blake, Curran, Power, Rees, Buckle,
Alexander, Flack, Rowbotham. Subs: Potter, Smith, Speakman, Nyamah,
Vanninen. REFEREE: Steve Baines (Chesterfield). Attendance: 2668.
A vital three points for Pool, the games are running out now
and Pool must keep the pressure on the teams around them. Today's
three points haven't moved Pool back into the play off places,
but have most definitely kept Pool in touch and the battle for
points continues. Next up is a tricky away trip to Rochdale.
Although saying that all of Pools remaining games are going to
be tricky.
30/03/00 - Exeter City Preview
On paper you would be confident of a home win for the Pool, wouldn't you? well
must Poolies would. And that HAS to be the result if Pool are serious about playing second division
football next season. The away games at Chester and York certainly brought Pool down the earth
with a bump
A six point return was the target from the games at Chester and York. 4 would have
been good enough, 3 points would have sufficed, 2 points would have seen the unbeaten run intact.
But just 1 measley point was not good enough. It's Pool failure to win on the road which is putting all
the good work done at the Vic in jeopardy of being a waste of time. However the dream is still alive
as many of the tops teams still have to face each other as the season reaches it's climax. Chris Turner
takes his Pool team into the game knowing he still hasn't a clue were the all important goals are going
to come from. On loan James Coppinger has scored two in four games and looks a likely starter.
Fellow loanee Paul Beaver looks short of match fitness and can surely hope for little more than a
place on the bench. Returning loan star Chris Freestone didn't exactly set the world alight alongside
Coppinger at York, so that leaves Kevin Henderson as the other likely starter. Elsewhere in the team,
Sam Shilton has played two games this week and is approaching match fitness after his recent lay off.
Craig Midgley completed 90 minutes for the reserve's in a 2-1 win over Chester, he also got one of the
goals. The other was scored by Paul Arnison who will be looking to get into the first team after turning
his loan move from Newcastle into a permanent move last week. Turner certainly has options.
This season saw a 2-1 win for Pool away at Exeter with Gary Jones netting both
goals back in December with Pool sitting in 9th position. Season 1998/99 saw 2-1 defeat
away with both Exeter goals coming in injury time, painful? don't reminder me, ITN was there. At the Vic
a goalfest ended in a 4-3 win for Pool with Chris B**ch hitting a brace, Graeme Lee and an own goal
completing the scoring for the home side. Season 1997/98 witnessed a 1-1 draw at the Vic courtesy
of a Jon Cullen goal and another 1-1 draw at Exeter, again with Cullen on the score sheet.
In the 'Net yet again puts all it's well earned! creditibility on the line once more as we
predict a 3-0, yes read it and weep Exeter! THREE NIL to Pool. Kiss of death if ever I saw one
28/03/00 - Hartlepool United 3 Brann Bergen 1
Hmmm continue the work I was doing or write a match report!
not a difficult decision. Pool lined up against crack Norwegian
outfit Brann Bergen for the third game of Brann's preseason tour
of England. Brann whooped Sunderland 4-0 at Druham and drew 2-2
with Huddersfield before turning out against their hosts. Brann
are guests of Pool during their stay and are training with Pool
up at the facilities in Peterlee. Brann also seem to be using
Pools usually team coach (not important but I thought I throw
it in).
Three quid to get in, or two for me because the turnstile
women was busy talking to her turnstile mate and probably couldn't
substract two from five and perhaps my youthful good luck and charm
fooled her (NOT). Had to stand in the Millhouse because the club
wouldn't open my usual haunt which is the Town End. Unfortunately
Lawerence plonked himself right in front of the jury and proceeded
to sing 'Turner and West out, Honour in' for the rest of the first
half. He also wound Andy Dibble up by singing 'Dibbles on his pension'
Dibble propmtly told him to shut up!
Pool lined up: Hollund, Knowles, Strodder, Westwood, Shilton, Barron,
Miller, Fitzpatrick, Tennebo, Beavers and Coppinger a worrying
strong team. I could just imagine the stick CT would get if TM had his
leg broken. John tried his best to read out the Brann team but by the
looks on the faces of the Brann subs he was wide of the mark on a few!
not a job I would have looked forward to. Bloody cold night and the pitch
was damp after heavy showers during the day. The first half was played
at friendly pace, Brann look very happy with the ball on the floor and
passed it around well. However you could see Pool were well into their
season has they had the urgency about them. Miller and Fitz are forming
a good partnership in midfield and Sammy Shilton was making some impressive
runs down the left wing. Tommy Tennebo had a stormer of a first half,
looking like he was out to impress his fellow countrymen. HT: 0-0 bit dull.
During the half time interval the heavens opened and we
moved to the back of the seats in the Millhouse. H'angus mate, your top
entertainment and my sister wants to hire you for an assembly at West
View Primary school, she's a teacher so if you interested can be sorted
in no time! After playing ball with the reserve Brann keeper, the Monkey
one proceeded to nick a ball, then nick all the Brann teams drill tops
from the dugout.
Pool made the following subs for the second half, Dibble for
Hollund, Clark for Knowles, Freestone for Beaver, Henderson for Coppinger.
Brann stayed the same I think. Right from the kick off Pool took the lead.
A cross from the right was spilled by the visiting keeper and Shilton did
well to control then hit the back of the net. Andy Dibble then pulled off
two great saves and one goal was disallowed for Brann after a handball in
the area. About 10 minutes later Brann equalised. The centre forward (no
names on shirts) was put through one on one and Dibble raced out and slide
towards him, the striker went down and the ref gave a penalty. Bit harsh
on Dibble. The spot kick was blasted right down the middle. Pool then
retook the lead also through a penalty, Shilton made good progress into
the box and chipped the ball over the central defender who flattened him.
Paul Arnison grabbed the ball and duly dispatched it past the keeper. Pool
then scored again almost straight away. Again good work from Shilton as he
crossed into the center of the box and Lee Fitzpatrick rose well and headed
the ball straight at the keeper, who could do nothing about stopping it as
the header was well placed down towards the ground. After this final goal
Craig Midgley made a welcome return to the Pool team replacing Micky Barron. FT: 3-1.
All in all a canny work out for both teams, although the
conditions in the second half were bloody awful. For Pool it was great the
see Shilton in fine form and Midgley making his return. Hendo got some more
time under his belt and Fitzpatrick continues to progress well. For Brann,
well I don't know any of their player, the left sided striker, small fella
looked tricky but was well marshalled by Chris Westwood who looks superb at
the back. Attendance as I said last night, at a guess 500/600 but I'm crap
at guessing attendances.
Unfortunately I saw nothing to say we have an answer to our
goalscoring problems. Beavers doesn't look fit either, which to me seems a
strange decision to bring somebody in who's not ready to play first team
football at such a decisive time of the season. We are going to have to
struggle on with what we are doing I think. However I would go with the
changes that have been mentioned, Arnison didn't exactly stand out last
night, but saying that he did nothing wrong. I can't actually remember at
which point he came into the game. But I think he could with worth a start
instead of Knowles.
25/03/00 - York City 2 Hartlepool United 1
Chris Turner gave Chris Freestone his first Pool start since
his return from a month's loan at Cheltenham Town. Freestone took
the place of injured defender/striker Graeme Lee who's injury is
not as bad as was first thought. A suspected broken leg has turned
out to be ligament damage and there is optimistic talk of Lee
being fit in three weeks. Turner adopted an unusual 4-4-2 formation
with Micky Barron being pushed into central midfield in an attempt
to counter attack the winger system York play. Pool looked a little
uncomfortable with this system in the first half and went behind
in the 11th minute. A break down the Pool right saw a low cross
fired across the box and Williams was on hand at the far
post to slot the ball home. Pool contained York for much of the
remainder of the first half, but could not create much in the form
of attacks on the Minstermen's goal. HT: 1-0.
It looked like another Chris Turner roasting had taken place
during the half time interval, and with the thousand traveling
Pool fans making plenty of noise Pool started to take control of
the game. Paul Stephenson returning to one of his old haunts
started to pull the strings in midfield. Pool were on level terms
in the 53rd minute. Chris Freestone headed down to on loan
James Coppinger who hooked the ball into the top corner
of the net, much to the pleasure of the Pool fans behind the goal
and in the corner seats. Seconds later Chris Freestone was set
free and with only the keeper to beat he scuffed his shot and
an excellent chance for Pool to take the lead was gone.
The game entered a lull in the last 10 minutes with Pool unable
to find a winner and York seemingly happy with the point. However
a number of substitutions (all six were used by the two managers)
had the desired effect for City but not Pool. Chris Turner replaced
Lee Fitzpatrick with Thomas Tennebo and later James Coppinger
and Chris Freestone with Kevin Henderson and Paul Beaver. With
only five minutes remaining the new front pairing for Pool were
not given enough time to make an impact, especially as it was
the first time they had played together. However it was City
substitute Colin Alcide who grabbed the headlines. York gained
a corner in the last minute, Ian Clark headed the ball off the
line, the ball was pumped back in and Martin Hollund palmed away,
the third cross fell to Alcide who made no mistake and
rammed the ball home. FT: City 2 Pool 1.
Hollund, Knowles, Strodder, Barron, Westwood, Clark, Stephenson,
Miller, Fitzpatrick (Tennebo), Freestone (Henderson), Coppinger (Beavers).
Unused subs: Dibble, Arnison. Bookings: Barron. Attendance: 4096.
So the Pools fans went home empty handed and feeling slightly
robbed. For whilst it is true Pool could not find the decisive
second goal which would have given them full control, they did
enough to deserve a point away from home. Gary Jones moved onto
8 goals for the season after he took just 21 minutes to open
his account for Halifax Town. Pool now face Exeter City
at home on....April Fools day! Who's going to be the fool then?
24/03/00 - York City Preview
Well transfer
deadline day brought one big surprise for Pool and that was striker Gary
Jones going out on loan to Halifax Town. For a team pushing for a play off
position is seems like a strange decision to release a striker to a fellow
rival. So far the loan of Chris Freestone has not benefited Pool one little
bit, in fact just the opposite, Cheltenham are breathing down Pools neck,
as a result of Freestone aiding their cause with two goals in four games.
Chris Turner has not started with Freestone since he returned, so any new
found confidence is not going to last long while he's keeping the bench
warm. There is the school of thought that Jonah could do Pool a big time
favour by banging in a few goals against some of Pools rivals, if this is
the case then fine. However ITN finds it difficult to image this is the
reason Chris Turner has allowed Halifax to use the striker who has started
roughly 90% of Pools games this season.
Pool are unbeaten
in six games, but only two wins come in this sequence. Tuesday nights 1-1
draw at Chester will only really become either two points lost or one point
gained after this match at York. If Pool collect the three points then the
two point per game average is being kept up. If Pool draw or lose then the
result at Chester will look really bad. York have taken seven points from
the last nine and with new manager Terry Dolan in charge they have been
busy in the transfer market in recent weeks.
This season Pool won
2-1 at Victoria Park on boxing day with a double from Kevin Henderson in
front of a crowd of 4668. Apart from that there's no real recent (last two
season) history as York have been swaggering about in division two. Paul
Stephenson returns to one of his old haunts, so expect a fired up Beaver,
that's Stephenson not new signing Paul Beaver, although his should be fired
up as well. So expect two fired up Beavers, wish I'd never bothered now!
Well Pool
need to win, York have nothing much to play for, they are just about safe
and definitely can't make the play offs. Pool are unbeaten in six, York
have hit a bit of form of late. Which leaves us with another draw. But Pool
have been hit by a bit of controversy this week and with a new striker in
on loan perhaps sneak a win by the odd goal, go on then In the 'Net puts
it's credibility once more on the line and says Pool to win 3-2.
18/03/00 - Chester City 1 Hartlepool United 1
Pool manager Chris Turner stuck with the team that beat
Torquay 2-0 as his team visited bottom of the table Chester
City. With John Rudge and the Nottingham Forest Chief Scout
in attendance a late move for Tommy Miller may still be
on the cards. With no wind on a warm night and good pitch Pool
suffered an early blow when on only three minutes Graeme Lee
was stretchered off with what was later found out to be a
broken leg. ITN wishes Spike a swift recovery. Henderson replaced
Lee in the forward line. Chester drew first blood in the 23rd minute
when Scott Hemmings easily beat Paul Stephenson who had
dropped back to cover Darren Knowles. Hemming then smashed his shot
past Hollund who was none to happy with Stephenson. During the
first half Chester had the upper hand throughout as they battled
and kept Pool on the backfoot. HT: 1-0.
In the second half Pool finally came more into the game. Early
into the half Beckett clashed with Martin Hollund, but after
treatment Hollund was able to carry on. The turning point came in
the middle of the half as Darren Moss fouled Clark. A bit of
afters followed and Moss appeared to stamp on Clark. Moss was
sent off and Pool saw their chance. Strodder saw a header cleared,
but on 76 minutes Lee Fitzpatrick pulled Pool back on terms.
Paul Stephenson fed the ball to Fitzpatrick from the wing and he
slide the ball home form inside the box. On 77 minutes Chris
Freestone replaced James Coppinger in attack and Pool continued
to put the home side under pressure. Tommy Miller hit the post
on 79 minutes and Paul Stephenson shot wide soon after. Pool could
not find a winner and the game ended 1-1. FT: 1-1.
Hollund,
Knowles Strodder, Barron, Westwood, Clark, Stephenson, Miller, Fitzpatrick
, Lee (Henderson), Coppinger (Freestone). Unused subs: Dibble, Arnison, Tennebo.
Referee: Ray Mathies (possibly!). Bookings: Fitzpatrick, Clark, Barron. Attendance:
1816.
Initially after going behind 1-1 doesn't seem a bad result.
Looking at the slightly bigger picture it means Pool must win
at York on Saturday. Two points a game will see Pool remain
in a play off position. If Pool fail to win at York then this
will be seen as a bad result. But Pool remain unbeaten in six
games now and are still in the play off positions. Game on.
21/03/00 - Chester Preview
After Saturdays easy win over Torquay, Pool move onto what is likely to be a much
stiffer task. Although Chester are bottom of the third division the task in hand should not be
taken lightly. Pool know this more than any other team in the league after being in a
similar position to what Chester are in at this time last season. When your bottom and facing
conference football next season you fight for your lives. Pool managed to get themselves out
of relegation trouble last season and Chester must emulate the sort of final quarter of the season
Pool pulled out if they are to escape from trouble themselves. This season their task looks a bit hard.
Two points behind Carlisle who have three games in hand and a free scoring Stephen Halliday in their
team. The Form...
Pool are now unbeaten in their last five matches and the Christmas/New Year
confidence has returned as Pool look to continue their push for a play off position. Saturday's
2-0 home win against Torquay saw Pool put some valuable breathing space between themselves
the chasing pack. A win tonight would see Pool further consolidate their current position. Pool
boss Chris Turner this week said Pool could still snatch an automatic promotion place. Whilst
this looks highly unlikey at present, Turner is showing the sort of ambition which will take Pool
all the way to Wembley this season. Chris Turner will stick with the team which ran out 2-0
winners over the Gulls. Chester dropped back to the foot of the third division on Saturday
after they lost 3-1 to Southend, whilst Carlisle did Pool a favour by defeating Barnet by 3-1
at Brunton Park. The Past...
Recent meetings at the Deva Stadium have seen Pool draw 1-1 in 1998/99 with that
man Chris B**ch scoring Pools goal, Pool collected a 2-1 win in the AWS with Stevie Howard and
Stuart Brightwell netting. Brightwell's was a golden goal winner. At the Vic last year Pool won 2-0 with
goals from the then recently signed front pairing of Chris Freestone and Gary Jones. In the 1997/98
season Pool lost 3-1 at the Deva with Paul Baker scoring the consoliation goal and at the Vic the game
ended in a 0-0 stalemate. The Prediction...
It's a difficult one to call, Pool on paper should run out comfortable winners. But at
this stage of the season Chester are hanging onto their league survival and with new manager Ian
Atkins at the helm they will be no push over. Pool though are much stronger and should not be beaten,
In the 'Net is going with the form book and predicting a 1-2 win. James Coppinger and Chris Freestone
to score the goals.
18/03/00 - Hartlepool United 2 Torquay United 0
As predicted
by In the 'Net Pool boss Chris Turner chose to partner on loan James Coppinger
with central defender Graeme Lee in Pools attack. That meant for the second
week running Gary Jones had no place in the team. Andy McAvoy picked up
an injury in the reserves defeat at Chesterfield in midweek, so his place
on the subs bench was taken by returning striker Chris Freestone. Freestone
played four games on loan to Cheltenham and scored two goals. Robins boss
Steve Cotterill wanted Freestone to stay for a second month, but the former
Northampton Town striker has decided to return to Pool and force his way
into the first team squad.
What should have
been a tense play off place shoot out turned out to be a comfortable home
win for Pool. In glorious sunshine Pool start the game full of intent
knowing they needed to win to keep the chasing pack at arms length. Pool
got off to a great start when in only the 10 minute of the game Paul
Stephenson tried his luck from for 25 yards, and scored his second
long distance goal in consecutive home games. After a midseason goal draught,
the midfield man has regained his eye for goal at a vital time. From this
point on Pool created half chances and should have increased their lead
on several occasions. Pool never looked in danger from the visitors. Pool
target Eifion Williams laboured hard upfront, but it was Tony Bedeau who
looked the most dangerous for the visitors. Torquay don't travel well
to Pool, in the last two seasons they have suffered 4-1 and 3-0 defeats.
HT: Pool 1 Torquay 0.
In the second half
Pool lost their way a little. The new pairing upfront were struggling
to gel. Graeme Lee is good in the air but not the most mobile on the ground.
On loan James Coppinger was struggling against the tall central defenders
of Torquay and it was clear the understanding needed for a front pair
was not there. However Pool wrapped the points up in the 77th minute.
Lee Fitzpatrick made a surging run which ended in his shot being blocked,
but Graeme Lee was the first to react and poke the ball under the
on rushing visiting keeper. This was Spike's 6th goal of the season and
his 3rd since his move from central defence to the front line. Soon after
Pool almost made it three when Lee dispossesd the keeper but could only
put his effort into the side netting with the keeper stranded. Two minutes
later Tommy Miller again looked certain to score, but with only the keeper
to beat his shot was well block by Staurt Jones who came off his line
well, another chance went begging. Pool looked well in charge and Torquay
never troubled Martin Hollund in the Pool goal. Chris Turner replaced
James Coppinger with the returning Chris Freestone. And in injury time
Lee Fitzpatrick was replaced by Thomas Tennebo. FT: Pool 2 Torquay
0.
Hollund,
Knowles Strodder, Barron, Westwood, Clark, Stephenson, Miller, Fitzpatrick
(Tennebo), Lee, Coppinger (Freestone). Unused subs: Dibble, Arnison, Henderson.
Referee: Scott Mathieson (Cheshire). Bookings: Fitzpatrick. Attendance:
2766.
A comfortable win
for Pool and a vital three points. With fellow play off contenders dropping
points left right and centre, Pool are now in 6th position, moving ahead
of Barnet after his win. Next up is a trip to rock bottom Chester City.
Chris Turner will be looking for his team to continue their five match unbeaten
run, however he will know not to underestimate the home side. Ian Atkins
men are rock bottom after losing to Southend. Chesters home record makes
painful reading for the clubs fans, 3 wins - 4 draws and 11 defeats. Pool
need to remain unbeaten to make sure the road to Wembley is still on the
horizon.
16/03/00 - Torquay game preview
From having only one fit recognised striker available, Pool boss Chris Turner
now has 5. Yep read it again FIVE. And they are Gary Jones, out of form and
dropped for the trip to Barnet. Kevin Henderson, came through 90 minutes of
reserve team football at Chesterfield and is regaining fitness fast. Chris Freestone,
back from a successful loan period at Cheltenham, Frees is looking to regain
his place in the Pool team. James Coppinger, on loan from Newcastle, the £750,000
rated youngster scored on his debut and could be a dark horse for a starting
place. And finally young Adam Boyd, tipped to be a star of the future by many.
This all sounds impressive, so why are we only looking for one striker from
five? well CT is continuing with centre back Graeme Lee as the battering ram
in the Pool forward line. Fair play, none of the strikers have been scoring and
Spikes doing a (jeff) sterling job. ITN reckon it will be Coppinger or Henderson to
start.
Pools form going into the game is steady. Unbeaten in four, but three of them
have been draws. Last weeks 1-1 with Barnet should really have been a 2-0 victory
for Pool. But the footballing gods decided otherwise. Torquay come to town right
on the heels of Pool in 8th place. In fact if they could have beaten Cheltenham
on Tuesday night, it would have been the Gulls in the last place off place,
not Pool. Likely to figure in the Torquay team is CT transfer target Eifion
Williams. The former Barry Town striker hit a hat trick against Pool on his
debut last season and was the subject of a £125,000 bid from Pool a fortnight
ago. Torquay turned the offer down but CT is likely to try for his man again
before the approaching transfer deadline day.
The weather in the Pool has been dry for the past week, so the pitch should
be in good condition for this time of year. Its a vital match and one Pool cannot
afford to lose. ITN prediction: 3-1 with Mr Coppinger the hero for Pool.
Recent meetings: This season saw a 0-0 draw at Plainmoor on the 23rd of November.
1998/99 Pool were hammered 3-0 at Torquay with that debut hat trick from Williams
doing the damage. At the Vic Pool ran out comfortable 4-1 winners with goals
from Stephenson, Howard, Lee and B**ch. 1997/98 saw Torquay win 1-0 at Plainmoor,
but again Pool ran out comfortable winners at the Vic, this time 3-0 with goals
from Paul Baker, Cullen and Lee again.
11/03/00 - Barnet 1 Hartlepool United 1
Pool boss Chris Turner brought new loan signings Paul Arnison
and James Coppinger into the squad for this vital game at
sixth place Barnet. Out of the team went Gary Jones, Kevin
Henderson starting upfront with Graeme Lee. Gary Strodder
returned to central defence. Pool got off to a good start
but Henderson was ruled to be offside in the second minute
In the 3rd minute Mark Arber headed over the bar after a
Barnet corner. Playing up the slope in the first half, Pools
Ian Clark hit a powerful shot straight at Harrison in the home
goal. Martin Hollund saved from Darren Curry in the 15th minute
and then saved again on 19 minutes from Ken Charlery and a
hestitation between Micky Barron and Chris Westwood. In the 24th
minute Pool had their best chance of the first half. A Stephenson
corner was headed on by Graeme Lee and Gary Strodder headed
wide from only six yards. In the 27th minute Scott McGleish hit
a first time shot wide of the mark much to the relief of Martin
Hollund. In the 40th minute Kevin Henderson got a header
on target, but it didn't trouble the home keeper. In the 44th
minute Ken Charlery shot wide again. An even first half,
although Barnet did notch up 15 corners. HT: 0-0.
Pool lined up for the second half the same as what ended
the first. Graeme Lee had the first chance with a 35 yard
shot which was saved by the home keeper. In the 47th minute
an Ian Clark cross was cut out before he got to Kevin Henderson
in a dangerous position in the box. In the 55th minute Graeme
Lee had the ball in the back of the net, but he was in an
offside position and the goal didn't count. In the 57th minute
Kevin Henderson took a knock but was ok to resume. In the 67th
minute loan signing James Coppinger came on for Henderson. His
first action saw a chance setup for Tommy Miller who's shot
was deflected for a corner. In the 73rd minute Pool took
the lead. Stephenson crossed and Lee flicked the ball on
for Coppinger to tap the ball home. In the 78th minute
Thomas Tennebo replaced Lee Fitzpatrick. Pool looked comfortable
in front, with Gary Strodder having an excellent game in the
heart of defence. In the 87th minute Hartlepool born Paul
Arnison came on for Paul Stephenson. With time just about up
disaster for Pool. Against the run of play Ken Charlery
headed home from a right wing cross to deny Pool a vital away
win. FT: 1-1.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Barron, Strodder, Westwood, Clark,
Miller, Stephenson (Arnison), Fitzpatrick (Tennebo), Henderson (Coppinger), Lee.
Subs not used: Dibble, McAvoy. Attendance :2925.
In the end a disappointing result for Pool. A draw would have
been a good result before the game, but after leading going into
the final quarter of the game Pool should have won the match
and moved above Barnet in the third division. Pool face Torquay
next who beat league leaders Rotherham today and moved into
8th position right behind Pool. Another vital game for Pool.
09/03/00 - Barnet Previews
Pool travel to Barnet on Saturday looked to consolidate their position as last team in
the play offs. There are several teams lining up to replace Pool so a positive result is a must.
Barnet are on the slide, but Pool still haven't solved their striker problems.
It should be one hell of a game. But its more likely to be a bit of a
battle. Barnet will be looking to get back on the winning track and halt their slide
down the third division. Pool will aiming to keep their current unbeaten run intact
and consolidation their present play off position. Tuesday nights 0-0 draw at
home to Brighton was disappointing, but 4 points from 6 is not to be sniffed at.
If Pool can average 2 points a game between now and the end of the season, the
play offs are real. For Pool Kevin Henderson looks likely to go back on the
bench as he is lacking match fitness after his layoff with a knee ligament injury.
Gary Strodder returns from suspension and could well return to the centre of
defence with defender/striker Graeme Lee returning to the front line. Of course
these plans could all go out of the window if Chris Turner manages to finally
capture a striker this week. Turner has said he's could produce a list of FORTY
strikers he has tried to loan or buy in the last fornight, and he's still looking. With
the transfer deadline still two weeks away it would appear many clubs are
holding on to their players hoping for inflated pre-deadline fee's, as clubs
scramble for new blood.
A draw, no a home win, Pool to snatch it at the death, your guess is as good as mine
07/03/00 - Hartlepool United 0 Brighton HA 0
Gary Strodder's one match suspension meant Graeme Lee
returned to his usual central defensive position with Kevin
Henderson coming back into the team after an injury layoff.
Colin West took one of the places on the Pool bench as manager
Chris Turner continues his search for a striker. Pool were
hoping to tie up a loan deal with James Coppinger before the
Brighton game, but a £600,000 bid from Hearts held the deal up.
Arriving at the Vic on the back on two good results Brighton
looked full of confidence and passed the ball around quickly.
Pool suffered from not having the presence of Lee up front and
found chances hard to come by. In first half injury time
Tommy Miller skipped past two challanges before unleashing
a shot was cannoned of the post. The second half followed the
same pattern as the first. Brighton had the majority of position
but failed to trouble the Pool defence, on the one occasion
when the defence was breached Pool keeper Martin Hollund made
a spectacular finger tip save. In second half injury time
Pool had what looked like a certain penalty turned down.
Substitute Adam Boyd chased a Brighton defender who fell just
before the goal line and looked to clearly stop the ball with
his hand waiting for a free kick to be awarded for a push.
The referee checked with his linesman who indicated nothing.
The Pool players appealed but still no joy. If it wasn't a penatly
it most have been a free kick to Brighton! We'll have to see
what television replays show. All in all a fast game with little
chances. FT: Pool 0 BHA 0.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Barron, Lee, Westwood, Clark,
Miller, Stephenson, Fitzpatrick (Boyd), Henderson (McAvoy), Jones (West).
Subs not used: Dibble, Tennebo. Attendance :2734.
A slightly disappointing result for Pool. A win would have
seen Pool pull six points clear of 8th place Plymouth Arglye.
Pool now travel to 6th place Barnet and will be looking to at
minimum avoid defeat. Chris Turner though must step up his
search for a striker ASAP.
06/03/00 - Brighton Match Preview
Pool go into Tuesday nights match on a high after Saturday
impressive win over a strong Northampton team, another three
points will be firmly on the top of Chris Turners agenda.
So far this week more rumours of interest in Pools 14 goal
top scorer Tommy Miller have been flying around. Wigan put a
bid of £400,000 in for the Pool youngster last week, which
was prompted turned down by boss Chris Turner. David Platt of
Nottingham Forest has admitted he is interested, but cannot
see him tempting Miller to Forest before the transfer deadline.
Over the weekend Chris Turners mate Gordon Strachen said in a
interview he would have to pay £800,000 for Miller, and that's
all he paid for Chippo. The figure of £800,000 can be see as
the price put on Millers head by Turner and the Pool board, there's
no doubt Turner and Strachan will have discussed Millers future
has Coventry did Pools a favour with the signing of Sam Shilton.
For the game with Brighton who are currently going through
a purple patch, Pool will be missing Gary Strodder from the
centre of defence as he is suspended for one game. Strodders
absence will be seen as a blow by Chris Turner, however many of
the fans may not share this opinion. Since Strodders return to the
Pool lineup, clean sheets have been few and far between. Graeme
Lee is expected to drop back from the forward line to plug the
gap at the back. This means either Andy McAvoy or fit again Kevin
Henderson will start up front alongside the desperately in need
of a goal Gary Jones. Sam Shilton may well get a place on the bench
after missing the Northampton game with a groin injury. Another
three points would consolidate Pools play off ambitions and make
attracking this in need striker that little bit easier.
Brighton have been something of a bogey side for Pool in recent
seasons and close attention will have to be paid to teenager
Bobby Zomara who has burst onto the third division scene with
four goals in the rout at Chester and he notched again at
Halifax on Saturday.
Pool dangermen : Lee Fitzpatrick who has readopted
his shot on site policy which could well pay dividends.
Kevin Henderson if Hendo returns he'll want to get
back into the goalscoring grove as quickly as possible.
Paul Stephenson one of his best games of the season
against Northampton, a beautiful 25 yard goal and some excellent
corners. Expect more of the same form 'Beever'.
ITN Prediction : Well another home win looks on the cards as
Pool have regained their confidence. Brighton must not be taken
lightly though as they arrive at the Vic full of confidence themselves.
Take a look at the Brighton website.
04/03/00 - Hartlepool United 2 Northampton Town 1
So that's how to do it then, stop the old boy from scoring
and collect the three points. Pool boss Chris Turner was forced to
replace late withdrawal Sam Shilton with Ian Clark in the left
back position. Shilton tweaked a groin muscle during training
on Friday. The rest of the team lined up the same as the side
which started a week earlier at Home Park. Pool were faced with
the daunting task of keeping a fired up Stevie Howard quiet
on his first return to the Vic since his £125,000 transfer last
season. Howard claimed in the Hartlepool Mail on friday night
that he wanted to 'add a hat trick' to the two goals he'd already
scored past Pool this season. Howard still keeps in touch with
many of the Pool squad and is keen to join team on their end
of season 'jolly' to Magaluf this year, like he did last year!
Let it go Stevie, your a Cobbler now!
Three points for Pool were vital from this match as Pool looked
to drag themselves back into the play off reckoning. With Sarfend
beat Macc last night Pool had the chance to put some daylight between
themselves and the chasing pack. And Pool got off to a flying
start when in only the sixth minute Paul Stephenson
opened the scoring with a stunning volley. A Gary Strodder free
kick was headed back by Graeme Lee to Stevo whose 25-yard volley
rocketed into the bottom left hand corner of the net, giving Welch
no chance. In the 14th minute Cobblers skipper Frain chose to
head the ball towards goal when a shot looked the better option,
his effort was blocked by Stephenson. The ball ran to Howard
who blasted his effort over the bar and into the Town End.
Howard let out a 'b*****ds' cry towards the Town End, it looked
like he meant it towards himself, but he was in for a rough ride
from now on. Howard's frustration grew and resulted in a high elbow
whilst challenging his 'mate' Micky Barron. Pool's skipper took
a nasty fall as a result but was able to continue. Pool took
a two goal lead in the 29th minute. Paul Stephenson's corner
was brilliantly met by the towering Spike Lee at the far
post for his 6th goal of the season. In the 32nd minute Northampton
got themselves back into the game. A left wing free kick was flicked
on by Carlo Corrazin, Martin Hollund in the Pool goal seemed
to have the ball in his hands, but it slipped through and into
the net. Hollund disappear was clear for all to see, but the
Town End admirely got behind him and after a word from Darren
Knowles and captain Barron, Hollund dusted himself down and picked
himself up. He would fully redeem himself with an excellent
second half display. Corazzin was lucky to escape a booking after a
high challenge on Hollund which the keeper clearly did not appreciate.
Frain was yellow carded for a foul on Knowles after 39 minutes.
Hollund made a great save on the stroke of half time to ensure
Pool went in with the lead intact. HT: Pool 2 Northampton 1.
Both Corrazin and Hunter went close in the early stages of
the second half as Northampton looked to get back on level terms.
Lee Fitzpatrick was just denied with a long range shot and Stephenson
had a powerful free kick headed clear by Hunt as Pool attempted to
put the game out of the reach of Town. Hollund came into his own
in the closing stages. The Norwegian keeper made a series of
brave saves to keep Pool in front again proving that for every
mistake he makes he always proves his worth in the long run.
Spike Lee had a shot well saved by Welch and Tommy Miller had two
good runs just halted before getting into the box.
Howard went desperately close with a diving header in the 85th minute
and Hollund made two brilliant saves from Corazzin and Howard as
the Cobblers tried hard for an equaliser. Howard nearly had
the last say in the game but his 90th minute shot hit the side
netting much to the delight of the home fans. The two minutes
of injury time saw Pool play keep ball in the Cyril Knowles/Town
End corner of the ground as the clock wound down. FT: Pool 2 Northampton 1.
An excellent result for Pool who are back in the play off
pack in 7th position. This is the Pool of Christmas time, more
confident and attacking. Paul Stephenson had a brilliantly game
in midfield and Lee Fitzpatrick turned in his best performance
since returning to the club. With the addition of a striker Pool
are still well on course for a play off berth come April. Next
up is Brighton at the Vic on Tuesday night. A game Pool again
need to win to make sure they cement this play off position.
Look out for ITN's match preview sometime on Monday.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Barron, Strodder, Westwood, Clark,
Miller, Stephenson, Fitzpatrick, Lee, Jones (McAvoy).
Subs not used: Dibble, Henderson, Tennebo, Boyd. Attendance :2878.
NORTHAMPTON: Welch, Frain, Sampson, Green, Hunter, Howard,
Corazzin, Hendon, Spedding, Hunt, Savage. Subs: Hughes, Gould, O'Reilly, Hope, Crowe.
REFEREE: Paul Robinson (Hull).
28/02/00 - Northampton Match Preview
With the current trend of old boys scoring against
Pool (Howard, Cullen, Halliday, McKinnon) I reckon the local
bookies will be giving very short odds on another old boy Steve Howard
netting AGAIN past Pool as 5th placed Northampton visit Victoria Park on Saturday.
Stevie left the Vic to become Northampton's record signing
about a year ago now, and will be fired up to prove a point to
sections of the Pool crowd who never really appreciated his
alround game. Stevie hasn't had the best of starts at Sixfields
with similar problems with some fans. However he has regained
his place in recent weeks and scored the winner last Saturday
against Barnet. Carlo Corrazin has returned from Gold Cup duty
with Canada and could partner Howard in attack.
Northampton fans will be releaved to hear that Chris Freestone
is still out on loan to league newbies Cheltenham Town. Freestone
scored in his third game and if the clubs can agree a fee the
move may well be made permanent.
Chris Turner is likely to continue his search for a new striker
this week as using central defender Graeme Lee upfront is surely just a stop gap
until a new target man can be brought in, lots of names have
been bounced around the message board in recent weeks, with
Chris Hay of Swindon the most interesting. Swindon claim they
have turned down a £75,000 offer from Pools, but Chris Turner
has denied approaching the first division strugglers, although he
did admit to being interested in the striker. Hay is out of
contract in the summer so Swindon could be tempted to cash in
before the March transfer deadline. After three defeats in a row
the Pool first team regained some credibility with a valuable
point at unbeaten at home Plymouth Arglye last Saturday. Turner
is likely to stick with the same team which means no place in the
starting line up for the ever entertaining In the 'Net favorite
Ian Clark. Kevin Henderson may well be fit but Turner may prefer
not to rush him back this time, a place on the bench could be
the best he can hope for. In the 'Net prediction - battling home
win (fingers firmly crossed!).
Pool dangermen : Sam Shilton, scored one against Plymouth and will
be looking to get another as he's set himself a goal target
of 8 this season, currently on 3.
Tommy Miller, 14 goals from midfield and likely to have
more scouts watching him, in particular Stoke and Wigan seem
to be interested at the moment.
Graeme Lee, if Spike is upfront he's sure to get a goal
soon. Already scored 5 from central defence.
Gary Jones, been out of form in recent weeks and due
a good game.

26/02/00 - Plymouth Argyle 1 Hartlepool United 1
Chris Turner stuck with the team which lost to Carlisle
midweek for the long long trek to Plymouth. Sam Shilton returned
to the club were he made his debut as a 15 year old under then
boss Peter (daddy) Shilton. In heavy rain Pool started brightly and
Lee had two shots blocked by Plymouth defenders in the first minute.
But it was the home side who created the first real chance of the game,
in the ninth minute, when Paul McGregor raced clear down Hartlepool's
left flank and chipped keeper Martin Hollund only to see the ball come
back off the foot of the post. Pool recovered their poise and on 16 minutes
Gary Jones tried a snap shot from 20 yards, which was brilliantly tipped
over the bar by keeper Jon Sheffield. Two minutes later, Pool created their
best chance of the half when a Tommy Miller cross was met by Lee but,
although his first time shot beat Sheffield, it rolled the wrong side of the
post. In the 38th minute Plymouth opened the scoring when a tremendous
off the ball run by Paul McGregor saw him escape his marker and,
when a diagonal pass found him at the edge of the area, he looped the ball
over the advancing Mark Hollund. Full back Darren Knowles tried desperately
to prevent the ball crossing the line but couldn't keep his feet in greasy
conditions and the ball agonisingly rolled over the line. Three minutes
from the interval Paul Wotton tested Hollund with a fierce shot, but the
keeper made a great save, diving to his left and holding on to a very slippery
ball. HT: 1-0.
Hartlepool started brightly in the second half and a good run by Sam
Shilton in the 54th minute ended disappointingly when his cross was easily
cleared. Graeme Lee very nearly equalised a minute later when his 40-yard
chip beat Jon Sheffield in the Plymouth goal, but unfortunately it just drifted
wide of the mark. But the equaliser came in the 59th minute, after a good
spell of pressure by the visitors. Lee Fitzpatrick's left wing corner was only
half-cleared to the edge of the area and Sam Shilton raced forward
to ram home his third goal of the season. The goal gave Hartlepool new heart
and they very nearly added a second when Lee appeared to be bundled over
by Mick Heathcote, but the referee adjudged that it was a fair challenge.
Hartlepool made two substitutions in the second half, Ian Clark replacing
Fitzpatrick and Andy McAvoy replacing Gary Jones. It was McAvoy who
was involved in the 79th minute when his right wing cross was dropped
by Sheffield and again Lee was bundled over in the area with no penalty
awarded by the referee. Both teams had chances to take all three points
but niether could get the decisive second goal. FT: 1-1.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Shilton, Barron, Strodder,
Westwood, Miller, Stephenson, Fitzpatrick (Clark), Lee, Jones (McAvoy).
Subs not used: Dibble, Tennebo, Boyd. Attendance :3917.
After a couple of bad weeks this is a good point for Pool. A defeat
would have seen another of Pools play off rivals leapfrog them, a draw
see's Pool hold on to 8th position with two homes games coming up.
Hopefully this result will restore some of the teams battered confidence.
22/02/00 - Hartlepool United 1 Carlisle United 2
Pool were knocked out of the AWS at the Northern Area
Quarter final stage after the thrice postponed match finally
got played at the Vic. Pool old boys Stephen Halliday and
Rob McKinnon got the goals for Carlisle with Graeme Lee
scoring late on for Pool. Too little too late however. Next up
a tricky trip to fellow play off hopeful's Plymouth Argyle.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Barron (Clark (McAvoy)), Strodder, Westwood, Shilton,
Fitzpatrick (West), Miller, Stephenson, Jones, Lee.
19/02/00 - Hartlepool United 1 Macclesfield Town 4
Lets get the bread and butter out of the way first then.
Out went Hollund, replaced with Dibble. Out went Westwood replaced
by Barron. Out went Fitzpatrick, replaced by Tennebo. Out went
McAvoy replaced by Henderson. Out went Jones, replaced by
Clark. On a damp(!) pitch Macclesfield took the lead in the
8th minute. Barron and Dibble messed up what should have been
an easy clearance, Dibble was stranded and Kieron Durkan
hammered the Silkmen ahead. The lead was doubled on 22 minutes
when a Barron backpass got stuck in the mud and Richie
Barker picked up the lose ball and slammed it passed
Dibble. 0-3 came up on 37 minutes when John Askey
beat Darren Knowles to a right wing cross (although a clear
offside was missed by the linesman in the build up) and beat the
by now bemused Andy Dibble. Pool pulled a goal back when
Tommy Miller pounced on a cross on 39 minutes. HT: 1-3.
As the second half started any hopes of a Pool revival were
soon killed off. Two minutes after the interval, Askey headed
on for Richie Barker to score his second of the game.
Chris Turner replaced Kevin Henderson with Gary Jones and
Thomas Tennebo with Andy McAvoy. Pool tried hard but could not
find a way back into the game as super confident Macc passed
the ball about with a confidence the home team could only dream
of. FT: 1-4.
Pool team: Dibble, Knowles, Barron, Strodder, Lee, Shilton,
Tennebo (McAvoy), Miller, Stephenson, Henderson (Jones),
Clark. Subs: Hollund, Fitzpatrick, Westwood . Bookings: Strodder.
Attendance: 2838.
So HUFC have hit a new low point in the season. After Chris
Turners pleas for the fans to be patient with his team, this
was the last performance he would have wanted. Confidence looks
low and the fresh passing creative football of the first half
of the season seems a world away. However there is still time
to resurrect this season and perhaps, just perhaps this result
is the wakeup call the players have needed. Turner has talked
about a comfort zone, well that zone has just gone. We are
no longer in a play off position. With the promise of two fresh
faces next week ringing in fans ears Turner now has to prove to
his players and the fans that this season is still well and
truely still alive and kicking. Some will take a lot of convincing,
and although it's not a great deal of consolation, just look
where we were this time last season.
12/02/00 - Southend United 2 Hartlepool United 1
Pool striker Chris Freestone left to join Cheltenham on a month's loan on
Friday as Gary Jones and Kevin Henderson were added to the Pool
squad for the trip to Southend. Jones started upfront in place
of Freestone with Henderson on the bench as he lacked 100% match
fitness. Mickey Barron missed the match with a back injury so
Chris Westwood dropped back into defence alongside Lee and Strodder.
Lee Fitzpatrick stepped into the vacant midfield position. Andy
McAvoy partnered Gary Jones upfront. Southend started the brighter
with Scott Houghton shooting wide from 20 yards in only the third
minute. In the 17th minute Pool wingback Darren Knowles found
his way into the referee's notebook for a challenge from
behind. In the 19th minute McAvoy went clear down the right wing
but his cross to Jones was cut out by Shrimpers keeper Mel Capelton.
In the 22nd minute Gary Jones was flagged just offside after a long
ball from Chris Westwood. In the 31st minute Southend's Fitzpatrick
saw a header hit the underside of the Pool bar and the danger
was cleared. In the 44th minute Southend took the lead. Westwood
attempted a backheader to Martin Hollund, but the header was short
and Martin Carruthers nipped in, lobbed the ball over
Hollund and then tapped in to an empty net. Against the run of
play Pool pulled levelled almost instantly. Sam Shilton took
a corner and found Graeme Lee unmarked, and he headed
home to give Pool a fortunate level scoreline at half time.
HT: Southend 1 Pool 1.
Straight from the restart Southend regained the lead. Paul
Stephenson played the ball back in the direction of Gary Strodder
who wasn't on the same wavelength and Carruthers again
nipped in and beat Hollund for his second goal of the game.
In the 49th minute Tommy Miller crossed for Darren Knowles,
but Capelton cut the pass out before it could reach the Pool
wingback. On 60 minutes Chris Turner took off Lee Fitzpatrick
and replaced him with Thomas Tennebo. On 66 minutes Tommy Miller
set off on a typical run, after beating two players he was
stopped by a great tackle from last man Nathan Jones.
In the 72nd minute Kevin Henderson came on for Andy McAvoy.
In the 76th minute Gary Jones missed Pools best chance to pull
level. With only the keeper to beat Jones chipped the ball over
the keeper and the bar from 6 yards out. In the 85th minute Ian
Clark replaced Gary Jones. Clark brought some more invention
to Pool but the visiting team never looked like pulling level.
Dispite a poor performance pull still could have gained an
undeserved point. On 90 minutes Greame Lee had a header cleared
off the line and the final action of the game saw Sam Shilton
booked in the 93rd minute. FT: Southend 2 Pool 1.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Westwood, Strodder, Lee, Shilton,
Fitzpatrick (Tennebo), Miller, Stephenson, McAvoy (Henderson),
Jones (Clark). Subs: Dibble, Boyd. Bookings: Knowles, Shilton.
Attendance: 3337 (187 Pools fans).
A disappointing result for Pool, and as I mentioned on the
message board earlier this week Pool are most definately in their
sticky patch this season. Chris Turner now needs to strengthen
the forward line before what could be Pools biggest game of the
season so far next Saturday. Macclesfield visit the Vic and looking
at the league table if Pool are to remain in the play off positions
they must beat Peter Davenport's team who are four points behind
Pool but on the same amount of games. Pool may have a AWS game
with Carlisle on Tuesday night!
05/02/00 - Hartlepool United 1 Shrewsbury Town 0
All change for Pool, Craig Midgley has broken his collar bone
so will be out for 8 weeks. Gary Jones is suffering from a virus.
Kevin Henderson is still a week or so from recovering from knee
ligament damage. So into the team came Lee Fitzpatrick and on the
bench Adam Boyd. Tommy Miller played upfront with Chris Freestone
who was given his chance in the absence of any other strikers.
Chris Westwood continued in midfield with Sam Shilton keeping the
returning Ian Clark out of the left wing back position. Better keep
this report short and sweet, because there's not a lot to say and
I don't want to send you to sleep! In windy conditions quality
football was at a premium, with the ball spending more of the
match in the air rather than being on the ground. Early in the game
Chris Freestone nearly snatched an unlikely opener, he raced after
a backpass and slide in with keeper Edwards. The ball hit Freestone
and headed towards to goal, but bounced just before the line and
spun away for a goal kick. The first half ended with a chorus of
boo's as the home fans showed their frustration. The second
half wasn't much better. Chris Turner replaced Chris Freestone
with Adam Boyd, Lee Fitzpatrick with Ian Clark and Chris Westwood
with Andy McAvoy during the half. And it was teenager Boyd who
stole the show. In the final minute of the game a long ball forward
from the Pool defence looked no danger to Edwards, but has he tried
to shepard the ball behind for a goal kick Boyd stole in
and took the ball from the bemused keeper. Without hesitation
the 17 year old sent the ball goalwards from a near impossible
angle, and to the crowds delight the ball nestled in the far
end of the goal. A great goal from the youngster and the relief
in the Vic was clear. FT: Pool 1 Shrews 0.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Barron, Strodder, Lee, Shilton,
Westwood (McAvoy), Miller, Stephenson, Freestone (Boyd),
Fitzpatrick (Clark). Subs: Dibble, Tennebo. Bookings: None.
Attendance: 2933
A very similar performance to the 1-0 win over Carlisle, Pools
last match at the Vic. Without first choice striker Gary Jones and
Kevin Henderson Pool are struggling up front. Chris Freestone looked
good in the first half but faded in the second. Adam Boyd contribution
was a bonus, and he should be given the chance to show what he can
do with a start against Carlisle on Tuesday night. The three points
were much needed as all the teams at the top picked up wins. Pool
are still 5th but now above Darlo who play Peterborough tomorrow
(Sunday). Chris Turner shouldn't be happy with the performance,
but everybody should be happy with the result.
29/01/00 - Cheltenham Town 2 Hartlepool United 1
Chris Turner this week secured the services of Sam Shilton
until the end of the season 2000/01 after an initial four mouth
trial period at the club. Current Pool top scorer Tommy Miller
has signed an extension to his contract which will keep him
tied to the club until the end of the 2001/02 season. Come
'ere there's more. To complete an impressive hat-trick of
signings on the dotted line Mr Lee '25 yards screamer against
Darlo' Fitzpatrick is back at the club. Rumour has it Fitzpatrick
has wanted to return to Pool virtually since the day he left.
This week Chris Turner granted his wish and offered him a
full time contract back at Pool. All these in's have resulted
in one out. Gus Di Lella has left for pastures hot and sunny,
signing for Spanish third division side CD Mostoles. So going
into this game with league newcomers Cheltenham Chris Turner
had a few more cards up his sleeve. Out of the team went suspended
Ian Clark and injured striker Kevin Henderson. In to replace
them came Sam Shilton and Andy McAvoy. Lee Fitzpatrick had to
be content with a place on the bench as he's not particularly
match fit.
Pool went into this game looking to take a point minimum. However
it wasn't to be. Early in the match Pool had two great chances
to take the lead. Firstly Gary Jones was sent clear but with
just the keeper to beat he chipped the ball over the bar. Andy
McAvoy then set off down the wing but his cross/shot was neither
close to Gary Jones or troubling the Robins keeper. In the 33rd
minute though Cheltenham took the lead. Jamie Victory crossed
the ball over for Hugh McAuley to put the home side 1-0
up. As the first half drew to a close Cheltenham doubled their
lead. Mike Duff crossed for the experienced Neil Grayson
to nip in between both Micky Barron and Graeme Lee and give
Pool goalie Martin Hollund no chance with the resulting header.
HT: 2-0.
Chris Turner probably turned the air blue in the visiting dressing
room at half time in an attempt to spur Pool to life. But if he
did there was little effect. In the 63rd minute Turner showed his
clear disgust by using all three of his subs. Craig Midgley
replaced the disappointing Andy McAvoy, Lee Fitzpatrick replaced
Paul Stephenson and Chris Freestone replaced Gary Jones. Freestone
should have scored within seconds of coming on. Duff wrong footed
his own keeper with a back pass, but the Pool sub scuffed the
ball wide. Martin Hollund then made two important saves first
from a Strodder backpass with Grayson closing in, and then
from Howell's who tried his luck with a 20 yard shot. In the
86th minute Pool were given a lifeline. Sam Shilton crossed
from the left and Graeme Lee put a looping header over
Book in the home goal. In injury time Lee Fitzpatrick crossed
and only a touch was needed for a Pool second, but niether
Freestone or Midgley could get to the ball. Martin Hollund again
saved Pool as with most of the time in attack Jamie Victory found
himself with only Hollund to beat. However Hollund raced out of his
box and won the ball in the air. FT: Cheltenham 2 Pool 1.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Barron, Strodder, Lee, Shilton,
Westwood, Miller, Stephenson (Fitzpatrick), Jones (Freestone),
McAvoy (Midgley). Subs: Dibble, Tennebo. Bookings: Miller.
Attendance: 3630
To little to late seems to sum this game up. With the majority
of the teams at the top of the third division slipping up Pool
remain in 5th position. Chances are being created and still
being missed. Rumours around the club this week have pointed to
Chris Turner looking for a new striker. If Pool could put just
half of these chances away they would be much higher than the 5th
position they currently occupy. However this result is not the end
of the world, all it means is Pool must continue to win at home.
And Shrewsbury are the next team Pool MUST beat at the Vic.
Pool youths did the club proud this morning with a thumping
6-0 win over Darlo. Adam Boyd hit a hat-trick with further goals
coming from Joe Weir, Craig Davidson and Lee Parkin.
Pool were this morning handed a home tie with Rochdale in
the semi final of the Northern section of the AutoWotSit Cup
IF they can beat Carlisle at Brunton Park in the quarter final
on Tuesday night. Pool's route to Wembley is now becoming much
clearer. Carlisle (away) - Rochdale (home) - two legged final against either
Chesterfield or Stoke City. If Pool beat Carlisle then this
competition MUST be taken seriously.
22/01/00 - Hartlepool United 1 Carlisle United 0
Another win which now means 12 wins out of the last 13 home games.
Chris Turner welcomed back striker Kevin Henderson in place of
Craig Midgley. Chris Westwood continued in midfield and Ian Clark
continued at left back. Ex Poolie Paul Baker brought Carlisle to
the Vic with only Chester keeping Carlisle from rock bottom of
the third division. A comfortable home win looked on the cards,
but mother nature had different ideas. A quick hail storm an
hour before kick off prompted a late pitch inspection. Referee
David Laws passed it fit to play on dispite it looking waterlogged
in a few areas. With a strong wind facing Pool in the first half
attacks were kept down to a minimum. Chris Westwood drove straight
at Luke Weaver from 30 yards on 20 minutes. On 23 minutes
Gary Jones cleverly directed a Paul Stephenson corner on target
but Weaver was there to catch the ball. On 26 minutes Martin
Hollund and Micky Barron got all mixed up allowing Dobie to steal
the ball and role it across an open goal. No Carlisle players were
on hand to put the ball over the line though. On 30 minutes
the game was stopped as Kevin Henderson went down under a heavy
challange. After receiving treatment, including oxygen, Hendo
was stretchered off the pitch with a bad ankle injury. Andy McAvoy
replaced him. On 33 minutes both Graeme Lee and Paul Stephenson had
shots charged down. A minute before half time good work from
Jones on the right saw a Chris Westwood header well saved by
Weaver. HT : Pool 0 Carlisle 0.
Carlisle claimed the first effort on target in the second half
when Graham Anthony shot straight at Hollund from 25 yards. On
54 minutes Pool finally took the lead. Andy McAvoy beat two
players and played the ball to Paul Stephenson. Stephenson chipped
the ball over the defender to Darren Knowles who cushioned a
header down to Tommy Miller who rammed the ball home from 12 yards
out. Soon after Pool increased the pressure on the visitors with
their nineth corner of the game. Weaver collected the ball but
then dropped it at the feet of Lee. The referee blew up for
a free kick. In the 64th minute excellent work from Miller
saw his cross pick out Gary Jones. But Jonah's first time volley
cleared the bar by a couple of yards. Tommy Miller then warmed
the Town End up as he nutmegged Carlisle wingback Clark before
pulling the ball back for Stephenson, whose first time shot was
just the wrong side of the post. Carlisle then had a 25 yard
free kick saved by Hollund. On 76 minutes injured Darren Knowles
was replaced by Craig Midgley with Westwood moving to right back
and Midgley taking his midfield role. Four minutes later Sam Shilton
replaced Ian Clark. Carlisle decided now was the time to try
and grab a point from the match. Gary Strodder threw himself
at a shot and Dobie squared the ball across the face of the Pool
goal with nobody able to connect. Into injury time and Pool were
forced to hang on with the home defence being stretched to the limit.
In the final move of the match keeper Martin Hollund did well
to collect the ball under pressure after substitute Damon Searle
crossed looking for Dobie in the centre. FT: Pool 1 Carlisle 0.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles (Midgley), Lee, Strodder, Barron, Clark (Shilton),
Westwood, Miller, Stephenson, Jones, Henderson (McAvoy). Subs
not used: Dibble, Freestone. Bookings: none. Attendance: 3530.
Another three points, but at what cost. Hopefully Kevin Henderson's
injury will not be as serious as it first looked. And with a bit
of luck Darren Knowles was just taken off as a precaution. This
game was far from nice to watch, a strong biting wind made sure of that.
But who cares when the points keep rolling in. Pool remain in 5th position
just a point behind waterlogged Darlo. The top three teams are breaking away in this
division, Pool must keep collecting the points if they are to be
involved in the end of season play offs. Next up a trip to
Whaddon Road, home of Cheltenham Town. Pool must be looking for
a win as Cheltenham are one of the teams to leave the Vic with
full points this season.
16/01/00 - Halifax Town 1 Hartlepool United 1
Back into the Pool squad came Gary Jones, Martin Hollund,
Graeme Lee and Ian Clark to the side which beat Preston 2-1.
Out went flu victim Sam Shilton, Chris Freestone, injured
Kevin Henderson and Andy Dibble. Chris Turner gave Chris Westwood
an unusual role in central midfield as Barron, Lee and Strodder
took the three central defensive places. Ian Clark returned to the
left wingback role with Shilton on the bench. Cheered on by an
healthy following of 742 Poolies, the away side took the lead
in the 24th minute. Paul Stoneman was caught in possesion by
Gary Jones on the edge of the Halifax box. Jones collected
the ball, held Stoneman off and bent a superb shot around Butler
in the home goal and into the top right hand corner of the net.
After this Pool should have increased their advantage. Jones had
a shot cleared off the line, Midgley hesitated and failed to beat
the keeper after a run from the half way line and Tommy Miller
had a great chance block by Butler as the half drew to a close.
HT: Halifax 0 Pool 1.
Pool started off the second half badly as Ian Clark was sent
off for a second bookable offence in the 53rd minute. This invited
Halifax to put pressure on the Pool goal and look for a way back
into the game. Pool looked comfortable in defence until the 86th
minute when Mr Stretton decided Gary Strodder blew to hard on
Lee Potter and awarded a penalty. Contacted looked minimal if any
and the dive was awarded an impressive 5.9 by the Czech judge.
Ex Poolie Jon Cullen stepped up and sent Martin Hollund the
wrong way from the spot kick. FT: Halifax 1 Pool 1.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Lee, Strodder, Barron, Clark,
Westwood, Miller, Stephenson, Jones (McAvoy), Midgley. Subs
not used: Dibble, Tennebo, Freestone, Shilton. Bookings: Clark (2),
Stephenson. Attendance: 3546.
Television replay will be interesting on this one. From my
view point (10 yards away), their seemed to be no contact on Potter.
However nobody saw the handball from the Rochdale player at the
Vic a couple of weeks back apart from the referee. Frazer Stretton
hardly seemed comfortable with this match. All of the four
bookings in a very relaxed match would have been no more than just
tellings off by other referee's and the decision to
overrule the linesman in the second half on an offside decision
bemused the travelling fans. Chris Turner said "There wasn't
really a bad tackle in the game. Until referees start showing
common sense there will always be some controversy and we will
be talking about bad refereeing decisions". Pool face Carlisle
at the Vic next, welcome back Mr Baker.
The Northern section quarter final of the AWS has seen Pool
drawn away to either Carlise or Wigan. If it's Wigan then Pool
will have another difficult game on their hands, Preston looked
a hard game, Wigan looks even harder. If Carlisle can beat Wigan
then Pool must be confident of a passage to the Semi Finals.
10/01/00 - Preston North End 1 Hartlepool United 2
Preston are sitting in second place in the second division.
Chris Turner decides to rest Martin Hollund, Graeme Lee, Ian
Clark, Kevin Henderson and Gary Jones. To replace them come in
Andy Dibble, Micky Barron, Thomas Tennebo, Chris Freestone and
Craig Midgley. Hands up all those who expected Pool to win? thought
so, not many hands there. Preston themselves put out a weaker team
but still Pool must take massive amounts of credit for knocking
Preston out of the AWS for the second successive season. Preston
took the lead in the 65th minute when Icelandic striker
Bjaki Gunnlaugsson took his chance in the PNE first team and
put his team 1-0 up. However Pool struck back with a late double
to knock PNE out. Craig Midgley got Pools equaliser on
83 minutes, and then top scorer Tommy Miller notched his
12th of the season with the aid of a deflection in the 86th
minute. Andy Dibble performed superbly in goal pulling off
several excellent saves. FT: PNE 1 Pool 2.
Pool team: Dibble, Knowles, Barron, Strodder, Westwood, Shilton,
Tennebo, Miller, Stephenson, Midgley, Freestone.
Pool fans will gratefully accept the passage into the next round
of the AWS, with the dream of a trip to the Twin Towers still
burning brightly. The draw for the next round is on Soccer AM,
Sky Sports Two this Saturday morning. Pool now move onto a 1pm
kick off with Halifax Town at the Shay on Saturday. The final game
of a difficult away trio will see Pool again facing a form team,
not that that will bother Chris Turner or super confident Pool.
08/01/00 - Swansea City 2 Hartlepool United 1
Pool boss Chris Turner decided against bringing back defender
Micky Barron for the clash with Swansea. Barron had now completed his
three match ban for his sending off, ironically against Swansea.
Turner stuck faith with Westwood, Lee and Strodder who had played
in the three wins during Barron's absence. Both teams went into
the game in excellent form, in fact top of the divisions form table.
Something had to give. It was Pool who drew first blood in a controlled
first half display. Striker Kevin Henderson toe poked
the ball past Roger Freestone in the home goal in the 40th minute
to send Pool into the break 1-0 up.
In the second half Swansea came back at Pool and drew level
in the 71st minute. Chris Westwood cleared a shot of the line but
as the ball was played back into the box Watkin headed
into the Pool net. On 76 minutes Pool found themselves behind,
a deep cross found Jason Smith at Pools far post and he
made no mistake with his finish. In the dying seconds of the
game Pools Gary Jones smashed the ball over from seven yards
out when it looked like Pool could have grabbed a well deserved
point. FT: Swansea 2 Pool 1.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Lee, Strodder, Westwood, Shilton,
Clark, Miller, Stephenson, Jones, Henderson (Freestone). Subs
not used: Dibble, Midgley, Mason, Barron.
Despite losing again to Swansea, Pool can hold their heads up
high. From third bottom of the third division Chris Turner has
put together a team who can more than stand the pace with the
best this division can offer. Next up is a tricky trip to Preston
in the AWS. Changes are likely as Turner looks to rest some of
his first team.
03/01/00 - Hartlepool United 3 Rochdale 2
Yet another three points for HUFC. In form Rochdale
(unbeaten in 7) came to town. 4498 fans saw an excellent match
with Pool finally running out 3-2 winners. Tommy Miller put Pool
ahead from the penalty spot on 8 minutes. Handball looks the most likely
reason for the spot kick. Chris Westwood put through his own
net on something like 18 minutes. In the second half Pool took
control of the game with a quick double strike. First Gary Jones
sprung the offside trap and slide the ball past the Dale keeper.
Then Ian Clark smashed the ball home from close range to
put Pool 3-1 up. Rochdale to their credit played some excellent
football and deserved got back into the match when on 65 minutes
Tony Ellis headed home at the far post. Pool though held
on to collect all three points. Check the message board for further
reflections on the match.
Pool team: Hollund, Knowles, Lee, Strodder, Westwood, Shilton (Mason),
Stephenson, Miller, Clark, Henderson (Midgley), Jones (Freestone).
Subs: Dibble, Tennebo. Bookings: None for Pool. Attendance: 4498.
All in all an excellent advertisement for live third division
football. Both teams played attacking football from beginning to
end. It is easy to see how Rochdale have won half their away games
in the league this season. They were the best team see at the Vic
in 99/00. However Pool are now finding the net on a regular basis
and the ground work for a long stay in the play off places is most
definatley being put in by Chris Turner and his team. Next up is
a very difficult match away to Swansea City. The Swans and Pool
are currently the two forms teams in the third division and another
good match should be on the cards.
