November
Pool
3 Barnet 0. Six home wins in a row, without conceding a single goal.
15 points out of the last 18 available, Pool put on an impressive show
of attacking football as Barnet arrived late at the Vic and were sent
home wishing they'd never arrived at all. A Tommy Miller hat trick did
all the damage. But Pool could have doubled the score as chances went
begging and Barnet got off lightly. Pool as a team were looking confident
and playing good football. Brighton 1 Pool 0. Travel sickness!
it's a long way to Brighton, who were now playing in Brighton and not
Gillingham. Pool returned empty handed from Albions temporary home at
the Withdean Stadium after Jamie Campbell hit his first goal for the club.
Pool 1 Chester City 0. There's the record equalled then, seven
consecutive home victories. Last achieved during the run in to promotion
at the end of the season 1990/91. This run though was arguably even more
impressive as Pool had not conceded a single goal in all seven victories.
Another Tommy Miller goal (his ninth of the season) saw off lowly Chester
as Pool continued their slow climb up the table. Hereford United 1
Pool 0. Pool embarrassingly crashed out of the FA Cup in front of
a live television audience. The team just never got started and the 1000+
fans who had made the very long journey South, left disappointed and wondering
what had gone wrong. Chris Freestone had a golden chance to give Pool
the lead in the first half, but he shot straight at the keeper. After
this Hereford pushed forward and took their second league scalp of the
season (York being the first). Their reward, a third round home tie with
Premiership Leicester City.
Torquay United 0 Pool 0. Turner's men dominated on the South Coast,
but couldn't convert possession into goals. Veteran keeper Neville Southall
kept Pool and in particular Gary Jones at bay with an outstanding display
of top class goalkeeping. Twice Jones was denied in one on one situations.
Andy McAvoy put pen to paper on a two year deal with Pool after Turner
had finally captured his man. Macclesfield Town 3 Pool 3. For sheer
entertainment look no further. Chris Priest and Richie Barker gave the
Silkmen a two goal lead, only for Ian Clark to keep Pool in the game.
When John Askey added a third the game looked all over. But in the 85th
minute Graeme Lee headed a second for Pool and in injury time a mazy run
from Ian Clark resulted in the goal which made sure the points were shared.
After the match Macclesfield manager Sammy McIllroy slammed his team saying
"It was the most unprofessional display I have ever seen, lacking in discipline
and commitment. I could not believe my eyes". Pool boss Chris Turner said
"We deserved a point, if I was Sammy McIllroy I'd feel pretty angry as
well".
The month of November saw two wins, two draws and two defeats. Pool left
the month in 13th position in the third division, but out of the both
major cups and with only the AWS left to bring any cup glory this season.
The memory of the long trip to Hereford was starting to fade and Pool
had a busy festive December to look forward to. The chase for Jan Ove
Pedersen was finally over as he opted to ply his trade in Austria, this
came as a huge blow to Pool who were banking on the little Norwegian joining
Pool and former a potential devastating trio of Stephenson, Miller and
Pedersen himself.
The story continues.............December.
